Haiti Trivia: Did you know homosexuality is legal in Haiti? There are no written laws against homosexuality, however, the largely Christian population opposes it and gays are sometimes persecuted by anti-homophobic citizenry.

Under Construction

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last week the overall unemployment rate for African-Americans increased 0.6 percent from July to 15.1 percent. The rate for adult Black males increased 1.2 percent to 17 percent and the rate for adult Black females increased only 0.2 percent to 11.9 percent. (Source)

Unfortunately, because a large percentage of the African-American workforce is concentrated in manufacturing, our community has suffered a disproportionate percentage of layoffs during this recession.

While it is necessary to work in all industries, it's time for African-Americans to consider a bigger commitment to emerging industries such as health care, computer technology, green jobs, information technology, energy etc. if we are to be competitive in the U.S. workforce in the future.

Happy Labor Day!

Jobs

A community activist in Kansas City, Missouri leads a labor march in March.

Last week, the U.S. Labor Department said the official unemployment number climbed from 9.4 percent in July to 9.7 percent in August. But the unofficial number jumped from 16.3 percent to 16.8 percent.
